Meet Karen
Karen Sonnen joined Care Chiropractic in November of 2004 after moving to Iowa from Wisconsin, and bringing her onto the team turned out to be one of the best decisions we have ever made. For 16 years Karen worked side-by-side with Dr. Sean helping patients, keeping the office running smoothly, and playing a huge role in the growth of Care Chiropractic. Through the great times and the challenging ones, Karen was always someone the clinic — and our patients — could count on.
Over those years Karen and Dr. Sean also became very close friends. Patients may remember the running joke that Dr. Sean had his “home wife” (his actual wife, Jolene) and his “work wife” (Karen). Fortunately for everyone involved, both women have a great sense of humor.
In 2020 Karen moved back to Wisconsin, but thankfully she never really left Care Chiropractic. She still works behind the scenes remotely two days a week helping keep things running smoothly. Simply put, we could not do what we do without her. The staff and patients still miss seeing her every day, and it’s always a big event when Karen comes back to town each year to spend a week working in the clinic. Those visits also include staying with the Dunkle family — where she continues her long-standing tradition of winning most of the nightly card games.
Karen graduated from Palmer College of Chiropractic in 1996 with an Associate of Science degree in Chiropractic Technology. In a fun twist of fate, both Karen and Dr. Sean were students at Palmer at the same time for about four months. Neither of them remembers meeting then, but there’s a pretty good chance they crossed paths in the halls without realizing the professional partnership that would come years later.
With nearly three decades of experience in chiropractic offices across Wisconsin and Iowa, Karen brings an incredible depth of knowledge to everything she does. In 2021 she founded her own chiropractic billing company, Billing Mouse, LLC, where she helps multiple chiropractic clinics manage billing and insurance with the same dedication and attention to detail that Care Chiropractic has relied on for years.
Karen Family Life
When she’s not working, Karen enjoys spending time with her husband Dan, their daughters Grace and Emma, crafting projects of all kinds, and tackling home improvement adventures. Grace recently completed her Computer Science degree from the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, and in a unique mother-daughter twist, Karen and Grace went back to school together in 2025 to study massage therapy. They plan to open a massage therapy business together in 2026.
Emma is keeping busy as well, working as a barista at a locally owned coffee shop near home and living nearby with her boyfriend, Henry. Between Karen helping run chiropractic offices, Grace diving into tech and massage therapy, and Emma keeping the coffee flowing, it’s safe to say the family has all the essentials covered.
Karen, Dan, and their family live in Germantown, Wisconsin, but she will always remain an important part of the Care Chiropractic family. Around here we like to say that even though Karen moved away, Care Chiropractic simply refused to let her go.
Dr. Sean and the patients at Care Chiropractic still miss Karen very much — probably more than she realizes. There remains a small (and admittedly very optimistic) hope that one day Karen and Dan might decide to move back. While that may be unlikely, hope is a powerful thing… and Dr. Sean plans to keep bringing it up every time Karen comes back to visit — right after she wins another hand of cards.
